Sculptra

What is Sculptra™?

Sculptra™ is a poly-L-lactic acid implant which when hydrated forms a watery solution. It is a biocompatible, biodegradable, synthetic polymer from the alpha hydroxy acid family. Lactic acids can be found in many skin peels and skincare products. Sculptra™ is a facial revolumiser and should not be confused with a dermal filler.

Does it hurt?

Whilst this is a multiple injection therapy it should not be too uncomfortable. A topical numbing cream is applied to the whole face about twenty minutes prior to the treatment. The Sculptra™ is hydrated with sterile water and some Lidocaine, an injectible local anaesthetic. As the treatment progresses the effects of the Lidocaine build up in the skin therefore minimising any discomfort.

Do I need to take time off work?

There is no reason why you should not go back to work straight after your treatment. If the treatment is carried out well there will be no down time. As with any injectible treatment there is always a risk of bruising which can be effectively covered with make up. Many clinics will carry a mineral based make up which can be applied immediately after. Your face may feel a little tender for the first 24 hours.

Who can benefit from Sculptra™?

As the aging process takes place it can be difficult to balance body weight maintenance with a fuller, firmer face although some of us are genetically inclined to have less facial collagen from an earlier age. With diminished collagen and facial weight loss, premature and unwanted aging will appear in the form of loose, sagging and lined skin. Sculptra™ can readdress this balance and restore a more youthful appearance.

What is the treatment like?

The skin is thoroughly cleansed. A series of injections are placed fairly deep beneath the skin. Your practitioner will expertly assess the areas of your face that need treating. The treatment will take about 30 minutes. After completion of the treatment your practitioner will massage the treated areas quite vigorously. You will be recommended to do likewise over the next few days.

How much improvement will I have?

Immediately after treatment your skin will look much fuller. Over the next week this will diminish as the water injected is reabsorbed. Gradually over the next five weeks you may see a gradual improvement. This is a progressive treatment, which takes between 3 and 6 treatments to achieve the necessary results. The results are usually quite dynamic.
